RH

The Beginning (1979) The story of RH starts on a front porch in Eureka, California. In 1979, Stephen Gordon was restoring a Victorian house when he realized he could not find quality hardware anywhere. So he started selling the good stuff himself — right from his porch. He put up a sign that read "Restoration Hardware." Six months later, he leased a 300-square-foot shop. At night, he worked as a bartender to keep the lights on. The Quirky Years and Near Collapse Gordon had a gift for nostalgia. His stores sold Slinky toys, Moon Pies, and old-fashioned garden tools. By 1998, the company went public. By 2001, it had 100 stores. But underneath the growth, something was wrong. The brand had no clear identity — it was a novelty gift shop that also sold expensive sofas. Result? A $350 million mess on the verge of bankruptcy. Enter Gary Friedman (2001) Gary Friedman had been passed over for the CEO job at Williams-Sonoma, where he helped turn Pottery Barn into a billion-dollar brand. He arrived at Restoration Hardware with a chip on his shoulder and a radical plan. He killed the knick-knacks. He dumped the puppet theaters. He bet everything on furniture — big, bold, architectural pieces that made a statement. In 2008, in the middle of a financial crisis, he took the company private. Everyone thought he was crazy. In 2012, he brought it back to the public markets with a new name: RH. Galleries, Not Stores Friedman pulled RH out of dying shopping malls and planted it in freestanding "Galleries." Then he added restaurants, wine bars, and rooftop gardens. The New York location? Three restaurants, a wine vault, a rooftop overlooking the Hudson. The San Francisco Gallery? Inside a historic steel building with a glass-enclosed atrium and trickling fountains. The England property? A 73-acre, 17th-century estate with three restaurants and the largest herd of white deer in Europe. These were not places to buy a couch. These were destinations. The Membership Model While other retailers slashed prices, Friedman eliminated sales entirely. No more discounts. No clearance racks. Instead, he introduced the RH Membership — a yearly fee for a flat discount on everything. The industry thought he was crazy. The industry was wrong. The Ecosystem By the mid-2020s, selling furniture was not enough. RH launched guesthouses (rooms start at $2,000 a night), private jets, a luxury yacht, and RH Residences — fully furnished homes for time-starved consumers. Why just decorate a home when you can sell the whole thing? International Growth RH opened Galleries in London, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Munich, and Brussels. No longer just an American story. The Bottom Line Today, RH generates over $3 billion in annual revenue. But the real story is about a former stock boy who dropped out of junior college, got passed over for a promotion, and built something that would outlast him. Gary Friedman signs every shareholder letter the same way: "Carpe Diem." From a front porch in Eureka to a 17th-century English estate. From Moon Pies to private jets. That is RH.
